How Does It Work?
- Advances in medical imaging have led to more kidney tumours being discovered early - often small (less than 4 cm) and detected incidentally during scans for other reasons.
- The primary treatment for localised kidney cancer is surgical removal of the tumour, with the goal of eradicating cancer while preserving as much kidney function as possible.
- Minimally invasive techniques such as keyhole (laparoscopic) or robot-assisted surgery may be performed.
- Depending on the tumour's size and location, your doctor may recommend partial nephrectomy (removal of only the tumour mass), cryoablation (a minimally invasive procedure that freezes and destroys the tumour) or radical nephrectomy (complete removal of the kidney).
