Uganda has two routes into India and one of the clearest sets of published rules in the region. The High Commission in Kampala states a minimum of three business days for Ugandan and Burundian nationals, spells out which documents a medical file needs, and says plainly that it has not authorised any agent to apply on your behalf. This guide covers both routes, the documents, what you pay, and the order to do things in so the three days stay three days.
Key takeaways
- The High Commission of India in Kampalaasks for the invitation letter to be generated through the Government of India's Medical and AYUSH Visa Portal, showing the cost of treatment in Indian rupees, the duration of treatment and the duration of stay. Any blank field means the hospital must issue a fresh letter.
- The High Commission states it has not authorised any visa or travel agent to apply, submit or process applications, and that there is one official website for each route.
- Visa fees are payable in cash in Ugandan shillings only, and the fee is not refundable whether the visa is granted or not.
- A visa is valid from the date it is issued rather than from your travel date, so applying months ahead of treatment wastes validity rather than buying security.
Two routes, and which one fits
The electronic route is run entirely by the Ministry of Home Affairs. You apply, pay and receive your authorisation by email without visiting the mission. The High Commission is explicit that it has no access to e-Visa applications and cannot advise on, expedite or answer questions about them, so queries go to the e-Visa Helpdesk, not to Kampala.
The regular route runs through the High Commission, whose jurisdiction covers foreigners legally resident in Uganda and Burundi. You complete the form online, selecting Uganda-Kampala as the mission, upload your photograph and documents, then print the form, affix a photograph, sign it and attend in person during morning consular hours. Biometrics are captured at submission for applicants aged 12 to 70.
The regular route suits longer treatment or plans that may change, since it produces a visa that can be extended in India, while an electronic visa cannot be extended or converted.
Key point: There is one official website for each route, and the High Commission states that no visa agent or travel agent has been authorised to apply, submit or process applications. Anyone offering to file your application for a fee is not acting with the mission's authority.
The documents Kampala asks for
| Document | What the High Commission specifies |
|---|---|
| Application form | Completed online under the correct category, printed, photograph affixed and signed. The category cannot be changed after submission |
| Passport | Original, valid at least six months, with two blank facing pages, plus copies of the bio-data pages |
| Yellow fever certificate | Original internationally valid card plus copies of the front and vaccination pages |
| Referral letter | Original, ink-signed on the letterhead of the Ugandan hospital treating you, with the history of the ailment, treatment already given and the recommendation for treatment outside Uganda, in the mission's published format |
| Indian hospital invitation | From an established, recognised or specialised Indian hospital, covering the patient and any attendants |
| Portal invitation letter | Generated by the hospital through the Medical and AYUSH Visa Portal, stating the cost of treatment in Indian rupees, the duration of treatment and the duration of stay |
| Funding evidence | A certified recent account statement if self-funded, or a sponsor's original letter giving the reasons, expenses, exact amount and number of visits covered, with their certified statement and identity document |
| Previous visits | Details of earlier visits to India. The mission warns that suppressing this information leads to rejection |
| Non-Ugandan residents | A valid long-term re-entry visa for Uganda, since the mission's jurisdiction covers legal residents of Uganda and Burundi |
A donor, where one is involved, applies as a patient on a separate invitation letter, since the medical visa category cannot be issued to attendants.
Patient tip: Biometrics are captured in person at submission for applicants aged 12 to 70. The mission adds that medical visa applicants medically advised to avoid unnecessary movement may bring an original ink-signed letter from the hospital treating them. It does not say what that letter secures, so ask the consular section what it will allow in your case, and get the letter alongside your referral.
Attendants and who can travel
A maximum of two attendants may accompany a patient, counting parents, relatives, doctors and nurses, and the mission asks for their details to appear on the hospital's invitation letter.
Two rules surprise families. Minors travelling with a parent who holds a medical visa apply for an Entry (X-Misc) visa rather than a medical attendant visa. And an attendant need not travel on the same flight, since a companion may join later or fly in from another country. The patient's name is endorsed on the attendant's visa sticker, worth showing to an airline if questions arise at check-in.
Fees, payment and vaccination
The High Commission publishes a visa fee schedule in Ugandan shillings by nationality, category and duration. Payment is in cash in local currency only, and the fee is not refundable whether or not the visa is granted, so check the medical and medical attendant line and carry the exact amount. The concessional rate shown for Uganda and Burundi under the least developed country arrangement applies to business and employment categories rather than medical visas, and other nationalities pay according to their own line.
On vaccination, the requirement follows your route as well as your passport. Travellers aged nine months and above arriving from, or transiting through, any of the 42 yellow fever endemic countries, a list that includes Uganda and Burundi, need an internationally valid yellow fever vaccination certificate issued at least ten days before the date of arrival in India.
Timelines: how to sequence the work
Three business days is a minimum for Ugandan and Burundian nationals, with more time for other nationalities and categories requiring additional clearance. The mission gives an estimate at submission, and the clock only starts on a complete file.
Sequencing matters more than the queue. Start with the clinical picture: your records, imaging and your Ugandan doctor's assessment, which produces the referral letter in the mission's format. Send those to the Indian specialist, whose opinion produces the treatment plan, the cost in rupees and the duration of stay. Only then can the hospital generate the portal invitation letter, and only then does the funding evidence make sense, since a sponsor writes against a stated amount. Passport renewals come first, given the six month validity and two blank page rules.
One timing trap is worth naming. A visa is valid from the date it is issued, not from your travel date, so applying far ahead of treatment shortens the useful window rather than protecting it.
At
TMTC
this sequencing sits with one coordinator rather than with you: a free initial consultation and record review, an online consultation with the Indian specialist, a plan with a fixed itemised quote, treatment at an accredited partner hospital
, and medical visa support alongside flight booking assistance. After you land: registration, recovery and cover
The Bureau of Immigration requires foreign nationals entering India on a medical visa valid for more than 180 days to register with the jurisdictional FRRO or FRO within 14 days of arrival, through the e-FRRO portal. Check the validity endorsed on your visa when you land. Every traveller also completes the digital arrival card online before landing, separately from the visa.
Recovery is the part most patients underestimate. Our patients stay at the
aftercare centre
with a doctor and nurse on site around the clock, daily physiotherapy and nutritionist-designed meals, until a clinician certifies them fit to fly. For Ugandan patients the post-treatment insurance
included in the package covers the flight back to India and treatment in India if a complication arises, rather than treatment at home, which is a real limit and one to read in the policy itself. You travel home with a discharge summary and imaging handover, remote follow-up, and coordination with your own doctor in Kampala or wherever you live. Every recommendation is reviewed by TMTC's Medical Director of Primary Care, a UK-registered GP, giving the plan an additional layer of independent UK clinical oversight.Make the Documents Agree With Each Other
Ugandan applications succeed when every document describes the same plan. The referral letter, the invitation letter, the cost in rupees, the duration of stay and the funding evidence should point to one treatment and one timeline, and the yellow fever certificate has to be ten days old before you arrive. Get that alignment and three business days is realistic. Everything above is checkable against the sources below. If you want the paperwork sequenced alongside the clinical planning, a

is a sensible place to begin.Frequently asked questions
How long does an Indian medical visa take from Uganda?
The
High Commission's visa information page
states a minimum of three business days for Ugandan and Burundian nationals, with additional time for other nationalities and for categories needing further clearance. An estimate is given when you submit, and processing only begins once your application is complete. Can an agent apply for my Indian visa in Kampala?
The High Commission states that it has not authorised any visa or travel agent to apply for, submit or process visa applications, and that there is a single official website for each route. Anyone charging to file on your behalf is not acting with the mission's authority.
What must the Indian hospital's invitation letter contain?
The mission asks for it to be generated through the Government of India's Medical and AYUSH Visa Portal, showing the cost of treatment in Indian rupees, the duration of treatment and the duration of stay. If any of those fields is blank, the hospital has to generate a replacement.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate?
Yes. Travellers aged nine months and above arriving from or transiting through any of the 42 yellow fever endemic countries, including Uganda, need an internationally valid certificate issued at least ten days before arrival in India. Arrange the vaccination early rather than in your final fortnight.
How is the visa fee paid?
In cash, in Ugandan shillings, at the High Commission. The published schedule sets fees by nationality, category and duration, and the fee is not refundable whether or not the visa is granted, so confirm the current amount with the mission before your appointment rather than on the day.
