Dr Nadir Abbas is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, holding a PhD from the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy and the NIHR Birmingham Biomedical Research Centre — one of the UK’s most prestigious biomedical research institutions. The University of Birmingham ranks #14 globally for gastroenterology and hepatology research.
He trained at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital liver unit, one of the largest liver transplant units in Europe, and works as a full-time NHS consultant at UHB seeing the full breadth of gastroenterology and hepatology conditions.
With a peer-reviewed publication record spanning four continents, Dr Abbas has positioned himself as one of the UK’s leading hepatology researchers. His work encompasses landmark national audits, international multicentre outcome studies, and practice-defining clinical guidance, reaching over 10,000 patients globally across more than 15 countries.
He has served as investigator on pivotal studies in primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), cirrhosis and surgical risk, and portal hypertension. His publications appear in the world’s most prestigious journals including the Journal of Hepatology, Hepatology, The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.
He has presented at the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) - including a podium presentation at EASL 2022, and is a recognised contributor to British Society of Gastroenterology clinical guidance. He served as national chair for hepatology trainees at BASL for two years and is an active pharmaceutical industry collaborator investigating novel treatments in liver research.
